Gait analysis clinic vs app: which do you actually need?

A clinic measures force and 3D motion and costs a booking and a few hundred. A phone app measures 2D angles in 60 seconds. Which one fits your situation.

For form coaching, a phone app is enough for most runners. For a persistent injury, a clinic is worth the money. The two measure different things, and the honest answer depends on which question you are asking: "how do I run better" or "why does this hurt".

What each one measures

Clinic or lab Phone app such as Caden
Setup Treadmill, force plates, 3D marker cameras or pressure insoles Your phone at hip height, 10 to 20 second clip
Measures Ground reaction force, joint moments, 3D hip and knee rotation, pronation, timing to the millisecond 2D angles: landing reach, knee bend, lean, arm angle, head position, cadence
Time 45 to 90 minute appointment, wait for a slot About two minutes, any day
Cost Often free at a shoe shop for a shoe fitting, typically 75 to 150 for a 2D physio video session, several hundred for a 3D lab A subscription, re-check as often as you like
Output A report, usually many pages, plus a clinician's verbal advice A score, six dials, annotated frames, one cue per metric, a 4 or 8 week plan
Follow-up Book again Re-film in four weeks, compare in the app
Diagnosis A clinician can diagnose Never. Guidance only

When a clinic is the right call

  • You have pain that has lasted more than a couple of weeks or changes how you walk.
  • You have had the same injury twice.
  • You are coming back from surgery.
  • A coach or physio has asked for force or 3D data.
  • You want a professional to look at your shoes, your history and your stride together.

None of that is something a camera should try to replace. A good physio with a 2D video and a trained eye is also worth more than an app for injury questions, even without force plates.

When an app is enough

  • You want to know if you overstride, lean, bounce or cross your arms.
  • You want a number to check again next month.
  • You want drills to do this week, not a report to file.
  • You want to check form on a treadmill in January without booking anything.
  • You have no pain and want to run more efficiently.

Most runners searching "gait analysis near me" are in this group. They want to see how they run and get told what to fix. A phone clip does that in 60 seconds.

The shoe-shop version

Many running shops offer a free gait analysis. It is usually a short treadmill clip watched by a staff member to recommend a shoe category, often based on pronation. It is useful for shoes and not designed for form coaching. It will rarely tell you about landing reach, cadence or arm swing, and there is no follow-up.

Using both

The best pattern we see: an app for the baseline and the monthly re-check, a clinician when something hurts or does not improve. Bring the app clips and scores to the appointment. A physio can do far more in 45 minutes with four weeks of video history than with a verbal description.

How to do it in Caden

  1. Tap Run a new analysis, set up a side-on shot, and film 10 to 20 seconds at your easy pace.
  2. Read the form score and the six dials. Tap the lowest one for the cue.
  3. Follow a 4 or 8 week plan on the Exercises tab.
  4. Re-film in week 4 and open Before and after in Stats.
  5. If a metric will not move, or something hurts, take both clips to a physio.

FAQ

Is a running gait analysis worth it?

Yes if it shows you something you can act on. For form, a phone app does that. For injury, a clinician with the right tools does. Paying for a lab report you cannot act on is the outcome to avoid.

How much does a running gait analysis cost?

It varies by country and clinic. Shoe shops often do a basic version free for a shoe fitting. A 2D video session with a physio is typically 75 to 150. A 3D lab is several hundred. An app is a subscription.

Can an app replace a physio gait analysis?

No. It replaces the part where you see your stride and get form cues. It does not replace diagnosis, force measurement or a clinician's judgement.

Does insurance cover gait analysis?

Sometimes, when it is part of physio treatment for an injury. Rarely for a standalone form check. Ask the clinic before booking.
