Question

Does arm swing matter in running?

Yes, arm swing matters in running because the arms balance the rotation of the legs and set your rhythm, and when they stop swinging or cross the chest the torso twists to make up for it.

What the arms actually do

Every time your right leg swings forward, it twists your pelvis to the left. Something has to twist back the other way, or your whole upper body would rotate with every step. That job goes to the left arm. It swings forward as the right leg does and cancels the twist.

That is the main job. Balance. The arms are a counterweight to the legs, and the swing is the size it needs to be to do that. Fast running with big leg drive needs a big arm swing. Easy jogging needs a small one.

The second job is rhythm. Arms and legs are locked together. Quicken the arms and the legs follow. That is why coaches cue the arms to raise cadence.

Should you swing your arms when running?

Yes. Runners who hold their arms still, or let them hang, still have to cancel the twist somehow. The torso does it instead. On video that shows up as shoulders rotating side to side, hands drifting across the chest, and often a head that wobbles.

It costs energy. The trunk muscles work to control a twist the arms would have handled for free.

What a good arm swing looks like

From the side: elbows bent about 90 degrees. Hands travel from about the hip to about the chest. The elbow drives back, the hand comes forward on its own. Shoulders stay low.

From the front: hands stay on their own side of the body. They may angle slightly inward, but they do not cross the centre line. See should your arms cross your body.

From behind: elbows point back, not out to the sides.

What causes a lack of arm swing?

Usually one of three things. Tight or tired shoulders that creep up toward the ears and lock the arm. Holding something, like a phone or a bottle. Or plain habit, often from treadmill running with hands near the rails.

The cue that works for most runners:

Elbows back, hands loose, like you are pulling something out of your back pocket.

Do you run faster if you swing your arms?

A little, and mostly in sprints and uphills where leg drive is big. For easy and steady running the gain is in not wasting energy on torso twist. Do not pump the arms harder to go faster on a long run. Match them to the legs.

How to check it with Caden

  1. Tap Run a new analysis and set up a side-on shot. Make sure your arms are visible and not covered by a loose jacket.
  2. Open the Arm bend dial. It grades your elbow angle at the key frames.
  3. Open Breakpoints and view the Toe-off frame. The skeleton overlay shows how far the elbow drives back.
  4. To see whether the hands cross the centre line, film your own clip running toward the phone. Caden analyses the side view only.

FAQ

Can you run without swinging your arms?

You can, but the torso will twist to make up for it. That costs energy and often shows as shoulder rotation on video.

What is the right elbow angle for running?

About 90 degrees at easy pace. It opens a little on the backswing and closes a little on the way forward. Tight elbows near 45 degrees usually mean tense shoulders.

Do arm swing exercises really work?

Cues and drills may help most runners in a few weeks. A-march and A-skip drills pair the arms with the legs and build the habit.
