Where can I get a free running form analysis?
You can get a free running form analysis three ways, a treadmill check at a running shoe shop, filming yourself and pausing the video at foot strike, or a free-tier app or web tool such as Forma or Movaia.
The shoe shop check
Most specialist running shops will put you on a treadmill and film your feet from behind for free. The staff watch how your foot rolls and suggest a shoe. It is a shoe-fitting tool. That is the honest framing.
It does not look at your landing reach, lean, knee bend, arm swing or cadence from the side. The camera points at your ankles. Go for the shoes. Do not expect it to tell you why your shins ache. And a treadmill stride is a little different from a road stride, which is worth knowing. See treadmill vs outdoor running form.
Film yourself and pause it
This costs nothing and shows more than people expect. Prop your phone at hip height, side on to a flat path, and film 10 to 20 seconds at your easy pace. Then scrub to the frame where your foot first touches the ground.
Look at three things. Is the foot well ahead of your hip, or under it. Is the front knee straight or a little bent. Is your torso upright or folded at the waist. Those three answer most of the "is my form bad" question. How to check your running form at home walks through it.
The catch is that you have to know what good looks like, and you have to find the same frame every time to compare. That is slow, and easy to get wrong.
Free apps and web tools
Two kinds again. Forma is a free web tool. You upload a clip and it returns an analysis. Movaia is also a web upload with a free tier. Both need the video sent to a server. Kinovea is free desktop software that lets you step through frames and draw angles yourself, with no automatic grading.
Caden is free to download for iPhone, iOS 17 or later. A clip gives you a form score out of 100, six metric dials, cadence, the annotated breakpoint frames and a coach's tip. Pro unlocks the full analysis, the practice plan and the before and after comparison, with the price shown in the app before you pay. The clip uploads with the audio removed and is stored privately under your account until you delete the analysis.

What free will not give you
None of the free options measure force, pronation or 3D rotation. Those need a lab or a physio with sensors, and that costs money. See how much a running gait analysis costs for the typical ranges.
Free also will not give you a diagnosis. A video shows what your stride looks like. It cannot tell you the cause of a pain. If something hurts, the free check is a good first step and a physio is the second.
How to check it with Caden
- Download Caden and tap Run a new analysis. Film 10 to 20 seconds from the side at easy pace, phone at hip height.
- Read the form score and the six dials. The foot landing dial is the one most runners need first.
- Open Breakpoints and tap Foot strike to see the frame you would otherwise have to find by hand.
- Read the coach's tip. If you want the practice plan and the before and after view, that is what Pro adds.
FAQ
Do running shops do a proper gait analysis?
They do a free treadmill check aimed at picking shoes. It looks at your feet from behind. It is not a full form analysis from the side.
Is Caden free?
It is free to download. Pro unlocks the full analysis, the practice plan and the comparison view, with the price shown in the app before you pay.
Can I analyze my own gait without any app?
Yes. Film from the side at hip height and pause at foot strike. Look at where the foot lands relative to your hip. It works, it just takes longer and you cannot easily track change.
