Question

What is the ideal running cadence for my height?

There is no exact cadence for your height, but at the same easy pace shorter runners naturally sit higher, roughly 170 to 185 steps per minute, and taller runners lower, roughly 155 to 170, because leg length sets stride length.

Does height affect running cadence?

Yes, but not directly. What affects cadence is leg length. Longer legs cover more ground per step, so at the same pace they take fewer steps. Height is a rough stand in for leg length, and that is all it is.

Two runners of the same height can have quite different leg lengths. One is long in the torso, the other long in the leg. The long legged one will sit at a lower cadence. So any chart by height is an approximation. Treat it that way.

Rough ranges at easy pace

These are the ranges most recreational runners fall into at an easy pace. They are not targets. They are where people tend to land.

  • Under about 165 cm: roughly 170 to 185 steps per minute.
  • About 165 to 180 cm: roughly 162 to 178.
  • Over about 180 cm: roughly 155 to 170.

Notice the overlap. A runner of 178 cm at 165 and a runner of 185 cm at 165 are both normal. There is no calculator that can give you a single correct number from your height. Anyone selling one is guessing.

Why the number alone does not help

The reason to care about cadence is where the foot lands. A long reaching stride puts the foot ahead of the hip and brakes every step. Raising cadence is one way to shorten that stride.

So a tall runner at 158 with a foot landing under the hip is fine. A short runner at 172 with a foot reaching well ahead needs to shorten up, even though 172 looks fine on a chart. The chart cannot see the landing. Video can.

How to find your own number

Skip the chart. Film yourself from the side at easy pace and count, or let an app count. Then look at the foot strike frame. If the foot lands under a bent knee, your current number is your ideal cadence. If it reaches, add 5 percent and check again in three to four weeks. Read how to count your running cadence.

How to check it with Caden

  1. Tap Run a new analysis and set up a side-on shot. Film 10 to 20 seconds at easy pace.
  2. Read the cadence chip on the results screen. That is your real number for your legs at that pace.
  3. Open the Where your foot lands dial. Caden measures landing reach as a fraction of your leg length, so a tall runner is not marked down for a longer stride.
  4. Open Breakpoints and check the Foot strike frame. A foot under a bent knee means your cadence suits your body.

FAQ

Is there a running cadence calculator by height?

Some sites offer one. They give rough estimates only, because leg length, pace and habit all matter more than height. Check your landing on video instead.

Is a low cadence normal for tall runners?

Yes. Runners over 180 cm often sit between 155 and 170 at easy pace with a perfectly good landing.

Is the ideal cadence different for men and women?

Not because of sex. Women are on average shorter with shorter legs, so they tend to sit a little higher. The same landing rule applies to everyone.
