Is gait analysis worth it for runners?
A gait analysis is worth it if it shows you something you can act on, and for most runners a side-view phone video that measures foot landing, lean, knee angle and cadence gives them that at home.
What you actually get from a gait analysis
The word covers three very different things.
A shoe shop puts you on a treadmill for a minute and watches your feet from behind. The goal is to sell you the right shoe. You leave with a shoe type, not a form check.
A physio films you from the side and front, then goes through the video with you. You leave with two or three faults, some cues and usually a few exercises.
A lab uses many cameras and a force plate. You leave with a long report of angles and forces. This is the version most people picture when they ask if it is worth the cost.
The value in every case is the same thing. Did someone show you a fault you could not see yourself, and tell you what to do about it? If yes, it was worth it. If you left with a shoe box and a vague feeling, it was not.
When a clinic is worth the money
Book a physio or a lab if any of these apply.
- You have a pain that keeps coming back and you want a professional to look at the whole picture.
- You have already tried to fix your form on your own and nothing moved.
- You want measurements a camera cannot give, like force or pronation.
A professional can also watch you walk, test your strength and ask about your training. A video cannot tell you the cause of a pain. It can only show you what your stride looks like.
When a phone video is enough
Most runners asking this question do not have a pain problem. They have a curiosity problem. They want to know if they overstride, if they lean too far, if their arms cross their chest.
A 15 second side-view clip answers all of that. See what is running gait analysis for what the video shows and what it does not. landing reach, torso lean, knee bend at midstance and cadence are all visible in 2D from the side. Those four things cover the faults a physio would point out first for most runners.
The clip also costs nothing to repeat. That matters more than people expect. A single clinic visit tells you where you are on one day. A clip every two weeks tells you if the drills are working. Compare the cost of each option in how much does running gait analysis cost.
What a video will not tell you
A 2D video from a phone cannot measure force, pronation or rotation at the hip. It cannot tell you why your knee hurts. It shows what your stride looks like from one angle at one pace. If your question is about pain, start with a professional and use video to track the work they give you.
How to check it with Caden
- Tap Run a new analysis and set up a side-on shot. Film 10 to 20 seconds at easy pace.
- Read the form score and the six dials. The lowest dial is the fault a coach would name first.
- Open Breakpoints and tap Foot strike. Look at where the foot lands compared with the hip.
- Read the coach's tip, then open the Exercises tab for a 4 or 8 week plan built from your lowest scores.
FAQ
Is a running lab worth the cost?
For a runner with a stubborn injury and a clinician who will act on the report, often yes. For a healthy runner who wants to see if they overstride, a side-view video shows that at home.
Do runners need gait analysis every year?
No fixed schedule. Re-check after a change in shoes, mileage or pace, or when something starts to niggle. With a phone clip you can re-check every two weeks during a form block.
Is a shoe shop gait analysis the same as a form check?
No. A shoe shop looks at your feet from behind to pick a shoe. A form check looks at landing, lean, knees and arms from the side. Both are useful, but for different questions.
