Question

Is it okay to keep running with knee pain?

Mild knee pain that fades as you warm up and does not change your stride is often okay to run through at low volume, but pain that alters how you run or lingers into the next day is a sign to stop and get it checked.

A simple traffic light

Green. A dull ache that fades in the first few minutes and is gone the next morning. Keep running, but cut the volume and skip the hills.

Amber. Pain that stays at the same level for the whole run and is a little stiff the next day. Run shorter and easier. If it does not improve within two weeks, see a clinician.

Red. Pain that gets worse as you run, that makes you limp, that swells, or that hurts when you walk or climb stairs. Stop running and get it checked.

The line that matters most is the stride. If pain changes how you run, every step is now loading the knee in a new way. That is when one sore knee becomes two problems.

Why running through it often backfires

A sore knee makes you protect it. You shorten one side, land harder on the other, and drop the hip. That shows on video as an uneven stride. The other knee, the hip and the shin now take load they are not used to. Running through pain that alters your stride is how one niggle spreads.

Check the stride before you decide

A short side-view video answers two questions. Is the foot landing far ahead of the hip with a straight knee? That landing pattern is often linked with knee pain. Read can running form cause knee pain for what it looks like. And is the stride even from side to side? If both look fine and the pain is mild, low-volume running is often reasonable. If the landing is a reach, shortening the stride may take some load off while you sort the rest.

A video shows the stride, not the cause. It cannot see inside the joint, and it cannot measure force. See a clinician if pain persists for more than two weeks, gets worse, or changes how you walk. There is more on what to film and what to expect at Caden for runners with knee pain.

How to check it with Caden

  1. Tap Run a new analysis and set up a side-on shot. Film 10 to 20 seconds at easy pace, and stop if the knee hurts more.
  2. Read the Where your foot lands dial and the Knee bend on landing dial. A reach with a straight knee is the pattern often linked with knee pain.
  3. Tap Breakpoints then Foot strike and Midstance. Check that the knee bends at midstance and that the stride looks even.
  4. Open Stats. Refilm every two weeks and use Before and after to see whether the landing has moved under the hip as the knee settles.

FAQ

Can I run with slight knee pain?

Often yes, if it fades as you warm up, does not change your stride and is gone the next day. Cut volume and avoid hills until it settles.

Should I stop running if my knee hurts?

Stop if the pain gets worse during the run, makes you limp, swells, or hurts when you walk. Those need a clinician, not a form cue.

Does changing my form fix knee pain?

It may lower one load on the knee, and many runners feel better with a shorter stride. It is not a treatment. Pair it with rest, strength work and a proper check if pain persists.
