Question

What are the signs of good running form?

Good running form shows a foot landing close to under the hips with a slightly bent knee, a tall body leaning a few degrees from the ankles, relaxed arms swinging front to back, and a cadence somewhere around 170 steps per minute or more at easy pace.

What good form looks like on video

Pause a side-view clip at the moment the front foot touches the ground. Good form shows up on that frame.

The ankle sits close to a line dropped straight down from the hip. The knee above it has a soft bend, not a lock. The shin is close to vertical. That is the single most useful sign, because it means the leg is loading under the body instead of reaching out to brake.

The torso is tall. There is a small lean forward, but it comes from the ankles, so the hip, shoulder and ear line up. There is no fold at the waist.

The head sits over the shoulders and the eyes look about 10 to 20 metres ahead.

The arms hang from relaxed shoulders. Elbows are bent near a right angle. The hands swing from roughly the hip to roughly the chest, forward and back, not across the body.

Behind the body, the trailing heel lifts toward the bum as the leg swings through. That is the back knee folding, and it makes the leg lighter to bring forward.

What good form feels like

Runners with good form describe it as quiet and light. Footfalls are soft, not slappy. Steps feel quick rather than long. The chest feels open and the shoulders feel low.

If you finish an easy run and your shoulders are up by your ears, or your neck is stiff, something upstream is tight. If your shins or knees ache after every run, look at where the foot lands. See how to tell if your running form is bad for the mirror image of this list.

What good form is not

It is not a forefoot strike. Plenty of well-coached runners land heel first, lightly, close to under the hip. Where the foot lands matters more than which part touches first. See what is overstriding.

It is not a specific cadence number. Around 170 is a fair marker at easy pace for many adults, but height, leg length and speed all move it. Read what is a good running cadence before chasing 180.

It is not the same at every pace. A 5k race stride leans more and lands further out than a recovery jog. Judge form at the pace you run most.

Run tall, land under your hips, keep your hands low and loose.

How to check it with Caden

  1. Tap Run a new analysis and set up a side-on shot. Film 10 to 20 seconds at easy pace.
  2. On the results screen, a form score of 85 or above is Excellent and 75 to 84 is Good, which means the stride is close to the list above. See what is a good running form score.
  3. Tap Breakpoints and open Foot strike. Check the ankle against the hip line on the skeleton overlay.
  4. Open Stats after a few runs. Green dials that stay green across runs are the real sign of good form.

FAQ

What is a normal running gait?

For most adults at easy pace, a normal gait has a light heel or midfoot landing close to under the hip, a small forward lean, and a cadence in the 160s or 170s. Small differences between runners are normal.

How do I know if my running form is correct for a beginner?

Film one side-view clip in your first month. If the foot lands close to under the hip and the body stays tall, leave it alone and build mileage. If not, fix the landing first.

Does good running form feel different for women?

The signs are the same. Hip position from the front and behind is worth a look for any runner, since a hip that drops on each step is common and easy to see on video.
