How to get running form feedback without paying a coach
Most form tools hand you a report and stop. Here is how to get feedback you can act on this week from a phone video, and what a coach adds that an app cannot.
You get useful running form feedback without a coach by filming a short side-view clip, having it scored on a few specific metrics, and then getting one cue and a set of drills for the lowest one. The feedback has to end in something you can do on your next run. A report full of angles with no instructions is data, not feedback.
Why most form reports do not help
Runners who have tried analysis apps and gait clinics tend to say the same thing afterwards: "It told me what was wrong but not what to do about it."
A typical report lists fifteen metrics with a percentage and a colour. Vertical oscillation 9.2 cm, amber. Tibial angle at contact 8 degrees, red. Ground contact time 268 ms. You end up on Google trying to work out which ones matter and what exercise fixes a tibial angle.
A good coach does the opposite. They watch you run, name one or two things, show you the frame where it happens, give you a drill, and tell you to come back in a month. That is the shape feedback should take.
What good feedback looks like
Four parts, in order:
- A small number of metrics in plain words. foot landing, back, knees, arms, head. Not fifteen. Not in Latin.
- The frame. The exact moment it happens, with the joints drawn on, so you believe it.
- One cue. A short phrase you can hold in your head while running. "Short, quiet steps." "Elbows back." "Tall neck." Never three at once.
- A plan with dates. Which drills, how many, how often, for how many weeks, and when to re-check.
If a tool gives you the first two and not the last two, you still need a coach to translate. If it gives you all four, you can start tonight.
Where AI helps and where it does not
Pose estimation, the software that finds your joints in video, is good now. On a phone it can track a runner at 30 frames per second and measure 2D angles reliably when the clip is well filmed. That covers landing reach, knee bend, lean, arm angle, head position and cadence. See how to film yourself running for what "well filmed" means.
What it cannot do is watch you over a season, notice that your form falls apart at kilometre 15, ask about your shoes, your job or the calf you strained in March, or know that you are the sort of person who overdoes every cue. A coach does that. An app does not.
So the honest split is: app for measurement, cue and plan. Coach for judgement, context and accountability. Plenty of coaches now ask athletes to send app results rather than film them in person.
How to do it in Caden
- Tap Run a new analysis, set up a side-on shot, and film 10 to 20 seconds at easy pace.
- The results screen shows a form score and six dials. Below them, the coach's tip says in two or three sentences what stood out and what to focus on first.
- Tap the lowest dial. The metric page shows the value, what was measured, what a 2D camera cannot see about it, and one cue. That cue is the feedback.
- Tap Breakpoints to see the frame where it happens, with the skeleton overlaid.
- Open the Exercises tab and start a 4 or 8 week plan built around the lowest one or two dials. Each session runs the length you choose, with step-by-step instructions for every drill.
- In week 4, film again. Open Stats and tap Before and after to compare the two clips.
If you also want a human
Use the app for the baseline and the plan, then send a coach or physio the two clips and the scores when something is not improving. You will get far more from a single session when you arrive with the video, the numbers and four weeks of history than when you arrive with "my knee hurts sometimes".
FAQ
Can an app replace a running coach?
For form measurement and a drill plan, yes for most recreational runners. For training structure, race planning, injury history and accountability, no. Many runners use both.
What is the best way to get feedback on my running form?
Film a side-view clip at hip height, get a small number of metrics scored, look at the frame where the problem happens, and get one cue and a drill plan. Re-film in four weeks.
How much does running form analysis cost?
A gait lab or clinic session is usually a few hundred in most countries and needs a booking. A coach's video review varies widely. A phone app costs a subscription and you can re-check as often as you like. Caden does not list its price on this page because it changes by region.
Is AI running form analysis accurate?
For 2D angles from a well-filmed side view, yes. It cannot measure force or 3D rotation, and it is only as good as the clip. Check that the skeleton overlay tracks your joints cleanly before trusting the numbers.
