Onform alternatives for runners who do not have a coach
Onform is a strong coach-to-athlete video app. If you run alone it gives you a slow-motion player and no verdict. What to use instead, and when to stay.
If you have a coach who uses Onform, stay on Onform. If you run alone, Onform gives you a very good slow-motion player and nothing that tells you what you are looking at. For a solo runner the better fit is an app that measures the joints itself and gives a verdict, and that is what Caden does. Onform is a coach-to-athlete platform. Caden is a runner-to-phone tool. Pick by whether there is a coach on the other end.
What Onform does well
Onform is the most complete video coaching app on iPhone. It is rated 4.79 from 8,616 iOS ratings, which is a lot of happy coaches. It records at 240 frames per second, so foot strike is visible frame by frame. It has drawing tools, side-by-side compare, voice-over, 3D motion capture, and a chat channel between coach and athlete. It absorbed Hudl Technique, so it inherited a large user base of coaches who film golf swings, tennis serves and running strides.
The praise in reviews is specific.
"It allows me to analyze videos frame by frame." App Store review of Onform, 5 star, US
Reviewers also name a real support person who replied to them. For a small app that is rare, and it matters.
If you are a coach, none of the rest of this page should put you off. Onform does the coach job well.
Where people get stuck
The 1-star and 2-star reviews of Onform fall into five clusters. None of them is about the video tools. They are about price, the trial, uploads, the Android app, and who the app is for.
The pricing shift. Onform used to be free for a lot of what it does. Reviewers who were there for the change are the loudest. One App Store review put the coach price at "$30 a month" at the time of writing.
"Onform has since locked the tool behind an overpriced $30 a month paywall which renders the tool unusable." App Store review, 1 star, US
The trial. Several reviewers say the free trial charged them on day one, or locked everything when it ended.
"They offered a 7 day free trial. I chose that option and was immediately charged for a full month subscription." App Store review, 1 star, US
Uploads. Onform stores video in the cloud. That means a long wait on a slow connection, and reviewers say it fails without a clear reason.
"Uploading video sucks. It will sit there and 'upload' for an entire day." App Store review, 1 star, US
It needs a coach. This is the one that matters if you are reading this page. Athletes get Onform free only when a paying coach invites them. Solo users find a video player and no guidance.
"Not for self analysis. Requires a coach" Google Play review, 1 star
The Android version. Onform on Google Play is rated 3.0 from 308 ratings against 4.79 on iOS. Of its 99 negative Play reviews in our corpus, 44 are about the Android app being a cut-down copy. Reviewers say it records at 30 frames per second instead of 240 and that the camera features are iOS only. If you are on Android, Onform is not the app its iOS rating suggests.
What a solo runner needs instead
A slow-motion player shows you your stride. It does not tell you that your foot lands 30 percent of your leg length ahead of your hip, or that your torso is 2 degrees behind vertical, or that your cadence is 164. A coach reads those things off the video. Without a coach, you need the app to read them.
That is the split. Onform gives a coach the tools. Caden gives a runner the reading.
Caden films 5 to 20 seconds from the side on your iPhone. The audio is removed and the clip uploads to private storage under your account for the pose estimation. You get a form score out of 100, six dials, cadence, freeze frames at foot strike, midstance and toe-off, a coach's tip in plain words, and a 4 or 8 week plan of drills and strength work built from your lowest scores. At the end you film again and open Before and after.
What Caden does not do: draw, voice-over, chat with a coach, record at 240 frames per second, or measure force, 3D rotation or pronation. It is a 2D measurement from a normal phone clip.

Who should pick which
- You have a coach who uses Onform: Onform. Do not switch.
- You are a coach who needs drawing, compare and chat: Onform, or see Coach's Eye alternatives for the others.
- You run alone and want to know if you overstride, lean or bounce: Caden.
- You run alone and want a number to check again next month: Caden.
- You are on Android: neither is a good answer yet. Caden is iPhone only. Onform's Android app is the one reviewers warn about.
- You want both: film once in Caden for the reading, then send the same clip to a coach on Onform.
How to switch or try
You do not have to leave Onform to try Caden. The two do different jobs and the clip is the same 10 to 20 seconds either way.
Film with your phone at hip height, from the side, with the whole body in frame. That clip works in both apps. See how to film yourself running.
Caden is free to download, with the price shown in the app before any subscription. If you do want to cancel Onform, do it from the App Store subscriptions screen, not inside the app, and do it before the trial day count runs out.
How to do it in Caden
- Tap Run a new analysis. Film 10 to 20 seconds from the side at your easy pace.
- Read the form score and the six dials. The lowest dial is your first job.
- Open Breakpoints and check Foot strike. Look at where the foot lands against the hip.
- Read the coach's tip for the one cue per metric.
- Start a 4 or 8 week plan from the result.
- Re-film at the end of the plan and open Before and after in Stats.
FAQ
Is Onform good for running form?
Yes if a coach is reading the video. It has 240 fps recording, frame-by-frame scrubbing and drawing tools. It does not measure anything by itself, so a runner without a coach gets a player and no verdict.
Is Onform free?
Athletes can use it free when a paying coach invites them. Coaches pay a subscription. One App Store review put the coach price at "$30 a month" at the time of writing. Reviewers also report the trial charging in full on day one, so read the terms.
Does Onform work on Android?
There is an Android app, but it is rated 3.0 on Google Play against 4.79 on iOS. Reviewers say it records at 30 fps and lacks the camera features of the iPhone version.
Can Caden replace my coach?
No. Caden gives you a measurement, a cue and a plan. A coach gives you judgement. If you have a coach, use Caden for the baseline and the monthly re-check, and bring the clips to them.
Which is more accurate, Onform or Caden?
They do not measure the same thing. Onform shows you the raw frames and leaves the reading to a human. Caden estimates joint angles from 2D video. See how accurate are running form apps for what that means in practice.
Onform, Hudl Technique and Coach's Eye are names that belong to their owners.
