Ochy vs Runeasi vs Caden: app, sensor or phone?
Ochy is a video app, Runeasi is a belt sensor sold to physios, Caden is phone video with a plan. Which one fits a runner, a coach or a clinic.
These are three different tools for three different buyers. Runeasi is a sensor on a belt plus software, sold to physios, and it measures impact and symmetry that no camera can see. Ochy is a video app for runners and coaches with a long list of metrics. Caden is a phone video app for solo runners that measures six side-view metrics and turns them into a 4 or 8 week plan. If you are a runner without a physio, the choice is between Ochy and Caden. If you are a physio, Runeasi is the one built for you.
What each one is
Runeasi
Runeasi is a spin-out from KU Leuven in Belgium. A small sensor clips to a belt on your lower back and streams to an app while you run on a treadmill. It gives a "Running Quality" score, impact loading and left-right symmetry, plus gait retraining cues. The vendor's own headline is "The leading platform for physios to assess runners" and it sells "client-ready reports". It is sold mainly to clinics on 6, 12 or 24-month plans with hardware. We could not retrieve pricing, because the pricing page blocked our request. The consumer apps on the App Store had no ratings at the time of writing. This is not a product you buy in the App Store and use alone.
Ochy
Ochy is a video app on iOS and Android. You film a run, upload it, and get a report covering pronation, pelvic tilt, overstride, cadence, knee position and flight time, plus exercises. It has a coach mode and a rear view. It holds 4.5 stars on the App Store and 4.6 on Google Play at the time of writing. Read the full Ochy review for the complaint themes.
Caden
Caden is an iPhone app. You film 5 to 20 seconds from the side, outdoors or on a treadmill. The audio is removed and the clip uploads to private storage under your account for the pose estimation. You get a score out of 100, six dials, annotated frames at foot strike, midstance and toe-off, a coach's tip, and a 4 or 8 week plan built from your lowest scores. It rejects clips it cannot read. It cannot measure force, pronation or anything 3D.
What Runeasi does well
A sensor measures things a camera cannot. Impact, in g, at every step. Left versus right loading. Step-to-step variability. That is why physios use it, and the physio community likes it.
"Run Easy is a sick piece of software and at a great price." Reddit r/physicaltherapy
For a runner coming back from a stress injury, or with one side that keeps breaking down, this is the kind of data a clinician wants. A video app cannot give it.
Where people get stuck with Runeasi
The complaints we found are not about the software. They are about the clinic session it is part of. Runners who paid for a sensor-based gait assessment often felt the report told them what they already knew.
"I live in NYC- it was $500 with the discount I received!!! It was cool to see the videos and all but not 'needed'" Reddit r/running
"he didn't really tell me anything I wasn't aware of. He did give me PT moves to do to strengthen my weaknesses. I did them for about a week before stopping" Reddit r/running
"Like I know what I need to be doing, I don't need someone to tell me that for $100. But I also don't know what I need to do to fix it." Reddit r/running
Reported session prices on Reddit ran to a few hundred dollars. The gap is follow-through. The data is rich, the plan is a sheet of exercises, and nobody checks back in four weeks unless you pay again. See how much does running gait analysis cost for typical numbers.
Where people get stuck with Ochy
Ochy's complaints are about the verdict and the billing. Coaches and physios who watched the same footage disagreed with the app.
"I've used this with clients and with myself and the feedback is just wrong." App Store review, 2 stars, GB
"DO NOT take the yearly plan which claims to include a 7 day free trial because they will take all your money upfront and when you cancel within the time you won't get any refund." Google Play review, 1 star
Reviewers also called the exercises "too general", had uploads stuck at 0%, and found the rear view would not upload. The full list is on Ochy vs Caden.
Three-way comparison
| Runeasi | Ochy | Caden | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Running Quality score, impact, symmetry, from a belt sensor | Pronation, pelvic tilt, overstride, cadence, knee position, flight time, from video | where your foot lands, knee bend on landing, knee bend at push-off, upper body lean, arm bend and head position, cadence, score out of 100, from video |
| Camera views | None. Sensor on the lower back, usually on a treadmill | Side and rear | Side, outdoors or treadmill |
| Where processing runs | Sensor to app to the clinic's platform | After upload | After upload, private storage, deletable |
| What you get after analysis | A client-ready report from the physio, gait retraining cues | Metrics report and exercises | Score, six dials, annotated frames, one cue per metric |
| Plan and follow-up | Whatever the physio prescribes. Re-test means another visit | Exercises. Reviewers say no reminders | 4 or 8 week plan, 3 sessions a week, Before and after in Stats |
| Who it is built for | Physios and clinics | Runners, coaches, clinics | Solo runners with an iPhone |
| Price note | Sold to clinics on 6 to 24-month plans with hardware. Pricing not public. Reddit users reported clinic sessions of a few hundred dollars | App Store shows $19.99 a month, $89.99 to $119.99 a year, $49.99 for 15 analyses, at the time of writing | Free download. App, sensor or phone: who should pick which
Pick Runeasi, through a physio, if you have pain or a recurring injury and want load and symmetry data a clinician can act on. You do not buy this yourself. You book a physio who has it. If you are a physio, read Caden for physiotherapists for how a phone app fits alongside a sensor.
Pick Ochy if you are a coach or a runner who wants the most metrics from a video, you need pronation or pelvic tilt in writing, or you are on Android.
Pick Caden if you are a runner without a physio, you want to see the frame behind each verdict, and you want a plan with a re-check date.
Pick none of them if you have no pain and no plan to change anything. Several Reddit users made this point. One said gait analysis "is unnecessary as long as you're not developing any weird pains." Fair. A form check is only worth doing if you will act on it.
Using two of them
The pattern that works: a phone app for the baseline and the monthly re-check, and a clinician with a sensor when something hurts or a metric will not move. Bring your Caden clips and scores to the appointment. A physio with four weeks of video history and a Runeasi belt can do far more in one session than with a verbal description. See gait analysis clinic vs app for the full argument.
How to switch or try
You cannot try Runeasi at home. Search for a physio in your area who lists it. For Ochy and Caden, film one side-view clip and run it in both on the same day. Compare what each says about your foot landing with what you see in the frame. Cancel any trial from the App Store subscriptions screen, not by deleting the app.
How to do it in Caden
- Tap Run a new analysis and set up a side-on shot. Film 10 to 20 seconds at your easy pace, outdoors or on a treadmill.
- Read the form score and the six dials.
- Open Breakpoints and check Foot strike. This is the frame a sensor cannot show you.
- Open the Exercises tab and start a 4 or 8 week plan.
- Re-film in week 4 and open Before and after in Stats. If something hurts or a dial will not move, take both clips to a physio.
FAQ
Can a runner buy Runeasi?
Not in the way you buy an app. It is sold to physios and clinics with hardware on multi-month plans. You get it as part of a clinic session.
Is Ochy or Runeasi more accurate?
They measure different things. Runeasi measures impact and symmetry directly with a sensor. Ochy estimates angles and pronation from video. A sensor is more direct for load. A video is the only way to see landing position. Neither replaces a clinician's eye.
Does Caden measure impact like Runeasi?
No. Caden measures 2D angles and cadence from video. It cannot measure force, impact, or pronation. If you need those numbers, you need a sensor or a lab.
Do I need a gait analysis at all?
If you have pain, yes, with a clinician. If you just want to run better, a phone clip and a plan you will follow is enough for most runners.
